wage rate indices, 2007
1. A general upward movement is noted in the wage rate index across the 4 quarters
of 2007. The index, with September 2006 as base, was 101.1 in the 1st quarter,
increased to 102.2 in the 2nd quarter, 106.1 in the 3rd quarter and reached
108.0 in the 4th quarter.
2. The highest increase (3.8%) in the index was registered in the 3rd quarter, when wages/salaries are adjusted for compensation.

3. The wage rate index for year 2007 increased by 4.4% from the base period, September 2006, to 104.4 during the year. This is due to an increase in wage rates across all industry groups.
4. The highest increase in wage rate was registered in ‘Hotels & Restaurants’ (+7.6%) followed by ‘Financial Intermediation’, (+7.1%). The lowest increase (+1.2%) was registered in ‘Health & social work’.
5. The most important industry group in terms of weight (17.1% of the total) namely ‘Manufacturing, mining & quarrying’ registered an increase of 5.8% in wage rates. In the second most important industry group ‘Public Administration and defence; compulsory social security’, wage rates went up by 2.2%.

The wage rate index for the General Government sector which comprises ministries,
government departments and agencies operating under them; municipalities; district
councils and Rodrigues Regional Assembly increased by 1.9% , relative to the
base period September 2006. This rise is lower than the increase of 4.4% registered
in the overall level of wages.
