Highlights

1. Monthly index

Overall index

The PPI-A stood at 141.2 in March 2008, following increases of 2.1%, 3.1% and 1.7% in January, February and March 2008 respectively.

Sugar cane

The index for “Sugar cane” for the period July 2007 to March 2008 remained the same at 135.4 as no change was registered in the provisional price of sugar in the 2007/2008 crop. It is to be noted that the index will be revised at the end of June 2008 when the final price is available.

Other crop products

- In January 2008, the index for “Other crop products” went up by 5.6%, due to the combined effects of increases in the prices of fruits (+20.0%), fresh vegetables (+8.2%) and a drop of 13.8 % in the prices of root crops.
- In February 2008, the index moved up by 13.4% as a result of the following price changes in: fresh vegetables (+26.0%), flowers and ornamental plants (+4.8%), root crops (-28.5%) and fruits (-8.6%).
- The index went up by 7.2 % in March 2008 as a consequence of increases of 9.6% in the prices of root crops and 9.1% in the prices fresh vegetables.
- The prices of fresh vegetables were high in January, February and March 2008 due to high prices of tomato and cabbage.

Animals and animal products

- In January 2008, the index for “Animals and animal products” was 6.5% higher. This was due to increases in the prices of poultry (+5.2%), eggs (+10.0%) and milk (+41.7%).
- The index rose by 3.3% in February 2008 due to an increase of 4.8% in the prices of poultry.
- Increases of 0.3% and 3.2% in the prices of poultry and eggs respectively caused the index to rise by 0.9 % in March 2008.

2. Quarterly index

During the first quarter of 2008, the PPI-A increased by 3.8% compared to the previous quarter. This was mainly due to higher prices of fresh vegetables (+ 20.4%), fruits (+6.0%), poultry (+8.6%), eggs (+10.9%), milk (+41.7%) partially offset by decreases in the prices of root crops (-20.7%) and goats (-1.6%).

Compared to the first quarter of 2007, the index decreased by 0.8%.

3. Yearly index

In 2007, producer prices of agricultural products were on the average 6.3% higher than in 2006.
