Contribution
of ICT sector to GDP
1. The ICT sector comprises ICT-related activities of Manufacturing, Telecommunications,
Wholesale and retail trade, and Business services as call centres, software
development and website development. In 2007, value added generated by telecommunications
activities represented 66% of the total value added of the sector, wholesale
& retail trade 13% and the remaining activities 21%.
2. Value added generated by the sector in 2007 was R 11.7 billion, 18.2% more than the 2006 figure of R 9.9 billion while the contribution to the GDP was 5.7% compared to 5.5% in 2006. In 2007, real growth rate of the sector was 14.6%.
Imports and Exports of ICT
goods
3. Available data indicate that the imports of ICT goods decreased by 57.9%
to R 5.9 billion in 2007 from R 14.0 billion in 2006 while imports of ICT services
was R 1.0 billion, the same level as in 2006. Exports of ICT goods including
re-exports decreased by 88.9% to R 1.1 billion in 2007 from R 9.9 billion in
2006 whereas exports of ICT services went up by 20.0% to R 1.8 billion from
R 1.5 billion during the same period.
Employment
4. The number of large establishments operating in the ICT sector was 125 in
2007, compared to 116 in 2006. Employment in these establishments stood at 10,390
in 2007, 27.0% more than the figure of 8,180 in 2006.
Fixed telephone lines
5. In 2007, the number of fixed telephone lines was 361,300, 1.1% higher than
the 2006 figure of 357,300. Teledensity defined as the number of fixed telephone
lines per 100 inhabitants which was 28.4 in 2006 edged up to 28.6 in 2007.
Mobile cellular subscribers
6. The number of mobile cellular subscribers increased by 20.2% to attain 928,600
in 2007 from 772,400 in 2006. Mobidensity or the number of mobile cellular phones
per 100 inhabitants increased by 19.3 % reaching 73.4 in 2007 compared to 61.5
in 2006.
Internet subscribers
7. The number of internet subscribers at the end of 2007 reached 166,000, representing
an increase of 15.7% compared to the figure of 143,500 at the end of 2006. The
number of internet subscribers per 100 inhabitants worked out to 13.1 in 2007
compared to 11.4 in 2006.
Digital Opportunity Index
(DOI)
8. The DOI is a composite index that measures “digital opportunity” or the possibility
for citizens of a country to benefit from access to information. The DOI for
Mauritius improved to 0.56 in 2007 from 0.50 in 2006.
9. According to DOI figures
compiled by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for 2006 for 181
countries, Mauritius ranked 58th with a DOI of 0.50 while Republic of Korea
with the highest DOI of 0.80 ranked first. It is noted that Mauritius ranked
highest among African countries.
