Highlights
Employment
1. Employment in
large establishments increased by 6,100 from 299,400 (192,500 males and 106,900
females) in March 2007 to 305,500 (196,200 males and 109,300 females) in March
2008.
Main increases in employment were registered in the following industrial groups:
| Real estate, renting and business activities | +1,900 |
| Hotels and restaurants | +1,900 |
| Financial Intermediation | +1,400 |
| Construction | +1,000 |
On the other hand,
a decrease of 2,600 in employment was registered in ‘Agriculture, hunting, forestry
and fishing’.
2. Foreign workers stood at about 22,800 (13,800 males and 9,000 females) in
March 2008, compared to 19,900 (10,800 males and 9,100 females) in March 2007.
3. Employment in large Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE) establishments increased
by 700 from 66,100 in March 2007 to 66,800 in March 2008.
Earnings
4. The highest average earnings
were registered in the ‘Financial intermediation’ sector ( Rs 27,400) followed
by the ‘Electricity, gas and water’ sector (Rs 24,400) while the lowest earnings
was registered in the ‘Mining and quarrying’ sector (Rs 6,700).
5. Overall average monthly earnings in large establishments increased by about
8.0 % from Rs. 13,400 in March 2007 to Rs.14,400 in March 2008. A general upward
trend was observed in all industrial groups. The highest increases were noted
in ‘Transport, storage and communications’(13%), ‘Financial intermediation’
(12%), ‘Real estate, renting and business activities’ (10%) and ‘Wholesale &
retail trade; repair of motor vehicles, motorcycles, personal and household
goods’ (10%).
6. Average monthly
earnings in the EOE sector grew by 4% from Rs. 7,600 in March 2007 to Rs. 7,900
in March 2008.
