Licences and registrations
In June 2008, the total number of licensed and registered activities in the island of Mauritius, was 113,047 representing an increase of 5% over the figure of 107,378 for June 2007. The majority of these activities, (55%) were in the industry group ‘Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles, personal and household goods’.
The highest increases were noted in the industry groups ‘Construction’ (22%), ‘Real estate, renting and business activities’ (11%) and ‘Manufacturing’ (9%).
The number of business activities was higher in the rural areas (54%) than in urban areas. Activities predominant in the rural regions were from the industry groups ‘Other community, social and personal service activities’ (65%) and ‘Hotels and restaurants’ (63%).
