Year 2008
1. As at end of 2008, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,272,040 comprising 628,105 males and 643,935 females.
2. Compared to a figure of 1,264,863 at the end of 2007, the population increased by 7,177 or 0.6% during the year 2008.
3. Islandwise, the population as at 31 December 2008 was as follows:

4. The population density was around 624 persons per square kilometre in 2008.
5. Persons aged below 15 years made up 22.7% of the population in 2008. Persons aged 15 - 64 years represented 70.5% and elderly persons aged 65 years and above, 6.8%. The dependency ratio in 2008 was 419 per 1,000 compared to 430 in 2007.
Vital Statistics
6. In 2008, the number of live births registered was 16,334, around 700 less than in 2007. The crude birth rate thus decreased from 13.5 per 1,000 mid-year population in 2007 to 12.9 in 2008.
7. There were 8,957 deaths registered in 2008, about 460 more than in 2007 (8,498). The crude death rate consequently rose from 6.7 in 2007 to 7.1 in 2008 per 1,000 mid-year population.
8. The number of infant deaths registered during the year 2008 was 239, lower than the 2007 figure of 261. The infant mortality rate fell from 15.3 per 1,000 live births in 2007 to 14.6 in 2008.
9. The number of still births registered during the year 2008 was 169 compared to 172 in 2007. However, the still birth rate has slightly increased from 10.0 per 1,000 total births in 2007 to 10.2 in 2008.
10. The number of marriages registered during the year 2008 was 11,120 compared to 11,547 in 2007. The crude marriage rate declined from 18.3 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population in 2007 to 17.5 in 2008.
