4th Quarter and Year 2008
1.1 Below are the highlights of the results of the quarterly survey on employment carried out at the end of December 2008 among Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE), consisting of all those enterprises, previously operating with an EPZ certificate and those manufacturing enterprises registered with the Board of investment.
2. Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE)
Number of enterprises
2.1 The number of enterprises at the end of the 4th quarter of 2008 stood
at 412 compared to 413 at the end of September 2008 and 404 a year ago.
2.2 During the whole year, 35 enterprises closed down and 43 new ones came into operation. In “Wearing apparel”, 15 closed down and 7 came into operation.
Employment evolution
2.3 During the fourth quarter, total employment decreased by 552 from 62,828 to 62,276. Female employment fell by 538 and male employment by 14. Total employment includes 18,050 foreign workers, 12 more than the figures registered at the end of the previous quarter.
2.4 During the one-year period ending December 2008, employment in the EOE decreased by 5,038 to 62,276 from 67,314 at the end of 2007. Employment decreased by 2,378 among males and 2,660 among females. In “Wearing apparel”, the most important group among the EOE, employment went down by 5,453.
Exports and Imports
2.5 EOE exports for the 4th quarter of 2008 were Rs. 9,422 million, that is, 7.1% higher than the 3rd quarter of 2008 and 4.4% lower compared to the corresponding quarter of 2007.
2.6 Exports for 2008 amounted to Rs. 34,932 million representing a decrease of 7.7% or Rs. 2,908 million compared to the figure of Rs. 37,840 million for 2007. Exports figures to our principal markets indicate decreases to the United Kingdom (-Rs. 497 million or -3.7%), France (-Rs. 298 million or -4.5%) and United States of America (-Rs. 752 million or -17.8%).
2.7 EOE imports for the 4th quarter of 2008 were estimated at Rs 4,620 million. This represents a decrease of 1.7% over the previous quarter and a decrease of 10.0% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2007.
2.8 EOE imports for 2008 amounted to Rs. 19,896 million compared to Rs. 21,036 million a year ago, that is a decrease of 5.4% or Rs. 1,140 million. Imports of raw materials increased by 2.7% and those of machinery and equipment decreased by 59.1%.
2.9 It is to be noted that the above figures do not include transactions of the EOE with the Freeport. In 2008, EOE sales to the Freeport amounted to Rs. 1,896 million compared to Rs. 2,633 million in 2007.
