Export
Price Index

The Export Price Index for the fourth quarter of 2008 stood at 123.0 representing
an increase of 2.3% over the previous quarter and a decrease of 2.6% over
the corresponding quarter of 2007.

The 2.3% increase of the EPI in the fourth quarter of 2008 was mainly due
to the effect of increases in the prices of “Miscellaneous manufactured
articles” (1.8%) and “Food and live animals” (3.0%), the
two most important components of the index.

Compared to price levels in the corresponding quarter of 2007, the 2.6% decrease
in the index was mainly due to price decreases of 3.5% in “Miscellaneous
manufactured articles” and 1.5% in those of “Food and live animals”.
Import
Price Index
1. The Import Price Index for the fourth quarter of 2008 worked out to 164.8,
representing a decrease of 8.6% over the previous quarter. Compared to the
corresponding period of 2007, the index went up by 5.5%.
2. The 8.6% decrease compared to the previous quarter was mainly due to lower
import prices of products falling under the section “Mineral fuels,
lubricants and related materials” (-32.8%), partly offset by price increases
in the following sections: “Food and live animals” (+1.5%), “Chemical
materials and related products, n.e.s” (+3.5%), “Manufactured
goods classified chiefly by material” (+6.1%), “Machinery and
transport equipment” (+8.4%) and “Miscellaneous manufactured articles”
(+3.3%).

Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2007, the index went up by 5.5%,
mainly as a result of price increases in the following sections: “Food
and live animals” (+10.3%), “Mineral fuels, lubricants and related
materials” (+4.6%), “Machinery and transport equipment”
(+8.4%), and “Manufactured goods classified chiefly by material”
(+4.0%) .
Terms
of trade
During the fourth quarter
of 2008, the terms of trade index increased by 8 percentage points to reach
75.
