Consumer Price Index
1st Quarter 2009

Highlights 


The Consumer Price Index, which stood at 115.5 in December 2008, registered a net increase of 0.6 point (or 0.5%) to reach 116.1 in March 2009


2. The main causes for the net increase were:

- higher prices of vegetables and sugar;
- lower prices of milk, bread, flour and cooking oil; and
- lower prices of diesel oil.

3. The inflation rate for calendar year 2008 was 9.7% while that for financial year 2007/08 was 8.8%.

4. Based on price movements observed for the past months and forthcoming price trends, the inflation rate for financial year 2008/09 is forecasted at around 7.0%.
