1. Government
expenditure on Social Security and Welfare rose from Rs 7,898 million
in 2002/2003 to Rs 12,880 million in 2007/2008, showing an increase of
around 63.1 %.
2. The number
of beneficiaries of Basic Retirement Pension increased by 17.3% from 116,324
in June 2003 to 136,408 in June 2008. The total amount paid by government
to all old-age pensioners was Rs 4,762 million in 2007/2008 compared to
Rs 2,918 million in 2002/2003, i.e. an increase of 63.2%.
3. There
were 22,611 Basic Widow’s Pensioners in June 2008 compared to 22,861
in June 2003, showing a slight decrease of about 1.1%. However, the amount
disbursed increased by 33.4% from Rs 584 million in 2002/2003 to Rs 779
million in 2007/2008.
4. The number
of Basic Invalid’s Pensioners increased by 15.8%, from 23,627 in
June 2003 to 27,363 in June 2008. The total amount disbursed rose from
Rs 718 million in 2002/2003 to Rs 1,126 million in 2007/2008.
5. The number
of beneficiaries of Basic Orphan’s Pension decreased from 553 in
June 2003 to 396 in June 2008. However, expenditure on Basic Orphan’s
Pension and Guardian’s allowance rose from Rs 14 million in 2002/2003
to Rs 21 million in 2007/2008.
6. In June
2008, 16,577 families benefited from Social Aid compared to 15,521 in
June 2003. The amount paid increased from Rs 276 million in 2002/2003
to Rs 430 million in 2007/2008.
7. It is
expected that the number of beneficiaries of Basic Retirement Pension,
that is persons aged 60 years and over, which was around 136,400 in 2008
would almost treble to reach 357,000 in forty years. Likewise, based on
the same rate as applicable in 2007/08, the amount to be disbursed in
2047/2048 will also nearly treble and amount to Rs 13.6 billion compared
to Rs 4.8 billion in 2007/2008
