Highlights 

1. Monthly index

Overall index

The PPI-A stood at 150.3 in March 2009, following increases of 2.6%, 6.3% and 0.6% in January, February and March 2009 respectively.

Sugar cane

The index for “Sugar cane” for the period July 2008 to March 2009 remained the same at 126.5 as no change was registered in the provisional price of sugar for the 2008/2009 crop. It is to be noted that the index will be revised at the end of June 2009 when the final price is available.

Other crop products

- In January 2009, the index for “Other crop products” went up by 12.0%, due to the combined effects of increases in the prices fresh vegetables (+21.3%), fruits (+8.7%) and decreases in the prices of root crops (-12.4%) and flowers and ornamental plants (-5.8%).
- In February 2009, the index moved up by 30.3% as a result of the following price changes in: fresh vegetables (+51.0%), fruits (+2.8%), root crops (-32.9%).
- The index went up by 2.2 % in March 2009 mainly as a consequence of an increase of 5.5% in prices fresh vegetables and a drop of 17.0%in the prices of fruits.
- The prices of fresh vegetables were high in January, February and March 2009 due to high prices of beans, cabbage, carrots and tomato.

Animals and animal products

- In January 2009, the index for “Animals and animal products” was 1.4% higher. This was due to increases in the prices of poultry (+0.6%), eggs (+4.2%) and pigs (+6.1%).
- The index rose by 0.2% in February 2009 due to an increase of 0.7% in the prices of eggs.
- Decrease of 0.3% in the price of eggs caused the index to go down by 0.1 % in March 2009.

2. Quarterly index

During the first quarter of 2009, the PPI-A increased by 5.3% compared to the previous quarter. This was due to higher prices of fresh vegetables (+ 41.8%), fruits (+11.6%), pigs (+6.1%), eggs (+5.0%), partially offset by decreases in the prices of root crops (-21.9%) and flowers and ornamental plants (-7.2%).

Compared to the first quarter of 2008, the index increased by 4.4%.

3. Yearly index

In 2008, producer prices of agricultural products were on the average 4.0% higher than in 2007.
