PRODUCER PRICE INDEX - MANUFACTURING (PPI-M)

1. The Producer Price Index, which stood at 176.2 in December 2008 decreased by 3.1% to reach 170.7 in March 2009. The index receded by 1.8% in January, 1.6% in February and increased by 0.2% in March 2009.

2. The 1.8% decrease in the overall index in January was mainly due to decreases in the sub-indices of “Manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco” (-3.4%), “Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products” (-0.7%) and “Manufacture of wood, wood products and cork except furniture” (-1.2%). The decrease in the sub-index of “Food products, beverages and tobacco”, which accounts for nearly 50% of the overall weight, was mainly the effect of price decreases of “Manufacture of grain mill products” (-18.5%), “Manufacture of prepared animal feeds” (-5.8%) and “Manufacture of dairy products” (-1.9%).

3. In February, the overall index fell by 1.6% due to decreases in the sub-indices of “Manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco” (-2.8%), “Manufacture of wood products and cork except furniture” (-0.5%) and “Manufacture of electrical machinery and apparatus” (-31.2%).

4. The index registered an increase of 0.2% in March mainly due to growth in the “Manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco” (+0.4%), “Manufacture of rubber and plastic products” (+0.3%) and “Manufacture of electrical machinery and apparatus” (+6.5%).

5. The overall index fell by 3.5% in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the previous quarter, mainly due to decreases in the sub-indices of “Manufacture of food products beverages and tobacco” (-5.0%), “Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products”(-2.3%) and “Manufacture of basic metals” (-7.1%).

6. Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008, the overall index for the first quarter of 2009 went up by 5.7%. This was largely due to increases in the sub-indices of “Manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco” (+4.8%), “Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products” (+4.0%) and “Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products” (+11.5%),”Publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media” (+2.9%),”Manufacture of basic metals” (+25.2%) and “Manufacture of fabricated metal products” (+7.2%).
