Highlights 

Export Price Index

1. The Export Price Index for the first quarter of 2009 stood at 97.5 representing a decrease of 1.7% over the previous quarter and an increase of 1.1% over the corresponding quarter of 2008.

2. The 1.7% decrease was mainly due to a decrease of 8.6% in the prices of “Food and live animals” partly offset by an increase of 2.2% in the prices of “Miscellaneous manufactured articles”.

3. Compared to price levels in the corresponding quarter of 2008, the index was higher by 1.1%, mainly due to increases of 3.9% in the prices of “Miscellaneous manufactured articles”.

Import Price Index

1. The Import Price Index for the first quarter of 2009 worked out to 104.4, representing a decrease of 6.6% over the previous quarter. Compared to the corresponding period of 2008, the index went up by 4.0%.

2. The 6.6% decrease compared to the previous quarter was mainly due to decreases in the import prices of “Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials” (-21.8%) and “Food and live animals” (-13.3%).

3. Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008, the index went up by 4.0%, mainly due to increases in the prices of “Manufactured goods classified chiefly by material” (+14.6%), “Machinery and transport equipment” (+12.0%) and “Miscellaneous manufactured articles” (+25.4%).

Terms of trade

The terms of trade index (i.e. the ratio of Export Price Index to Import Price Index) increased by 4 percentage points from 89 in the fourth quarter of 2008 to 93 in the first quarter of 2009. Compared to the corresponding period of 2008 the index decreased by 3 percentage points from 96 to 93.
