Quarterly Index of Industrial Production (QIIP)

First Quarter 2009

Highlights

1. The Quarterly Index of Industrial Production shows the evolution of the volume or real output of the Industrial Sector comprising “Mining and quarrying”, “Manufacturing” and “Electricity, gas and water supply”. Within “Manufacturing”, estimates by broad group, namely, enterprises formerly holding an EPZ certificate, Non-EPZ and “Sugar milling” as well as by main industrial grouping are given. Indices for the Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE) sector can be considered as being same as for enterprises formerly holding an EPZ certificate, as the latter group constitutes more than 95% of the EOE sector.

The Industrial Sector

2. In the first quarter of 2009 the overall index of industrial production decreased by 15.3% compared to the previous quarter, and increased by 2.2% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008. In the year ending first quarter 2009, i.e. second quarter 2008 to first quarter 2009, real industrial output went up by 2.2% compared to the corresponding period a year before. This is explained mainly by increases in the real output of “Sugar Milling” (4.6%) “Non-EPZ” (4.7%), “Electricity, gas and water supply” (2.6%) partly offset by decreases in “Mining and quarrying” (-2.4%) and “EPZ/EOE” (-0.4%).

Mining and quarrying

3. The real output of “Mining and quarrying” decreased by 18.4% compared to the previous quarter and by 9.9% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008. In the year ending first quarter 2009, real output went down by 2.4%.

Manufacturing

4. Manufacturing output in the first quarter of 2009 decreased by 18.0% compared to the previous quarter, and increased by 2.5% when compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008. In the year ending first quarter 2009, real output went up by 2.1%. This is explained by increases of 4.6% and 4.7% in “Sugar Milling” and “Non-EPZ” respectively, partly offset by a decrease of 0.4% in the “EPZ/EOE”.

5. Within “Manufacturing”, real output of the “EPZ/EOE” in the first quarter of 2009 decreased by 16.1% compared to the previous quarter and by 8.2% when compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008. In the year ending first quarter 2009, it receded by 0.4%.

6. Output of large “Non-EPZ” establishments, shows a decline of 16.3% in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 14.7% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008. For the year ending first quarter 2009, the index grew by 4.7%.
Electricity, gas and water supply

7. In the first quarter of 2009, real output of this section grew by 3.9% when compared to the previous quarter and a zero growth was noted when compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008. In the year ending first quarter 2009, it is estimated to have moved up by 2.6%.
