Highlights 

1. Introduction
1.1 Below are the highlights of the results of the Quarterly Survey of Employment carried out at the end of March 2009 among Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE), consisting of all enterprises, previously operating with an EPZ certificate and enterprises manufacturing goods for exports and holding a registration Certificate issued by the Board of Investment.

2. Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE)

Number of enterprises

2.1 The number of enterprises at the end of the 1st quarter of 2009 stood at 406 compared to 412 at the end of December 2008 and 402 a year ago. During the 1st quarter of 2009, 12 enterprises closed down of which 5 in Wearing apparel and 4 in Jewellery and related articles .

Employment evolution

2.2 During the 1st quarter of 2009, total employment decreased by 3,597 from 62,276 at the end of December 2008 to 58,679 at the end of March 2009. Female employment decreased by 2,647 and male employment by 950. Total employment includes 17,025 foreign workers, down by 1,025 against the figures registered at the end of December 2008.

2.3 Compared to March 2008, the number of enterprises went up by 4 while employment went down by 8,280. Male employment fell by 2,312 and female fell by 5,968. In Wearing apparel , the most important group in the EOE, employment contracted by 7,380.

Exports and Imports

2.4 EOE exports for the 1st quarter of 2009 were estimated at Rs. 7,829 million, that is, 16.9% lower compared to the previous quarter and 1.8% higher compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008.

2.5 Exports to our main EOE markets indicate decreases to the United Kingdom (-Rs. 334 million or -11.7%), France (-Rs 195 million or -13.6%) and an increase to United States of America (+Rs. 162 million or +21.9%) compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008.

2.6 EOE imports during the 1st quarter of 2009 was Rs. 3,784 million, representing a decline of Rs. 2,050 million (-35.1%) compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008. Imports of raw materials fell by Rs. 1,868 million (-34.0%) and machinery and equipment by Rs. 182 million (-53.5%).


2.7 It is to be noted that the above figures do not include transactions of the EOE with the Freeport. During the 1st quarter of 2009, EOE sales to the Freeport amounted to Rs. 475 million compared to Rs. 554 million for the same period of 2008.
