Highlights
Passenger traffic
Total passenger arrivals during the period January to June 2009 numbered 552,670 representing a decrease of 7.9% over the corresponding period of last year. During the same period, passenger departures numbered 582,464 (-6.6%).
Tourist arrivals
Tourist arrivals for the first semester of 2009 reached 413,504. This represents a decrease of 9.3% over the figure of 455,758 registered in the corresponding semester of 2008.
Arrivals from Europe went down by 6.9% to 278,621 with a 2.0% rise in arrivals from France, our leading market. As regards the other major generating countries, decreases were recorded in arrivals from the United Kingdom (-6.9%), Italy (-14.3%) and Germany (-19.1%).
Tourist arrivals from Africa contracted by 10.0% to 92,273. Arrivals from Reunion Island increased by 8.0% while those from the Republic of South Africa, our other major market of the region, declined by 22.4%.
Arrivals from the Asian market shrunk by 18.8% to reach 29,859, with India, our major market on this continent, registering a decline of 19.8%. Decreases in tourist arrivals from other Asian countries were as follows: People's Republic of China (-10.0%), United Arab Emirates (-17.1%), Japan (-18.9%), Singapore (-23.4%), Malaysia (-26.0%) and Hong Kong (-35.2%).
Tourist arrivals from Oceania and America fell by 40.9% and 8.3% respectively. Arrivals from these two continents numbered 12,324 representing only 3.0% of the total.
Gross Tourism receipts
Gross tourism receipts for the first half of 2009 were estimated by the Bank of Mauritius at Rs 18,249 million, that is a decrease of 17.7% compared to Rs 22,170 million for the same period of the preceding year.
Hotel Statistics
At the end of June 2009, there were 97 registered hotels in operation, with a total room capacity of 10,486 and 21,362 bedplaces. The average room occupancy rate for all hotels for the first semester of 2009 was 59% (71% in 2008) while bed occupancy rate averaged 52% (63% in 2008).
Forecast 2009
Based on information gathered from the main stakeholders of the sector and a decline of 9.3% observed in tourist arrivals for the first six months of the year, the initial forecast of 835,000 tourist arrivals for the year 2009 is maintained (-10.3% over 2008).
According to the Bank of Mauritius, tourism receipts for the year 2009 will be around Rs 38.2 billion (-7.3%) against Rs 41.2 billion in 2008.
