Producer Price Index - Agriculture - PPIA

Second quarter 2009

Highlights

In order to reflect changes in the production pattern of agricultural products, a new set of weights has been calculated with 2007 as base period, the previous one being 2002. PPI-A indices for the months of April, May and June 2009 were based on the new weighting pattern and base period.

1. Monthly index

Overall index

The PPI-A stood at 108.5 in June 2009, following decreases of 2.1%, 1.7% and 0.2% in April, May and June respectively.

Sugar cane

The index for “Sugar cane” for the period July 2008 to June 2009 has been revised from 93.1 to 95.5 in the light of the final price of sugar for the 2008 crop which is now available. However, given that the price is assumed to be the same during the whole of the crop year, no change is shown during the period April to June.

Other crop products

- In April 2009, the index for the sub-group “Other crop products” went down by 12.9%, mainly due to decreases in the prices of fresh vegetables (-15.3%), fruits (-21.2%) and flowers and ornamental plants (-1.3%).
- In May 2009, the index receded by 8.7% largely as a result of declines in the prices of fresh vegetables (-10.3%), root crops (-13.3%) and fruits (-1.3%).
- In June, the index decreased by 1.2% due to a drop in the prices of fresh vegetables (-7.9%) partially offset by increases in the prices of root crops (+31.6) and fruits (+14.3%).

Animals and animal products

- In April 2009, the index for the sub-group “Animals and animal products” went up by 3.5%. This was due to increases in the prices of eggs (+15.4%) and poultry (+1.0%).
- In May, the index rose by 0.6% mainly due to an increase of 4.6% in the prices of eggs.
- In June, increases in the prices of eggs (+1.2%) and goat (+1.8%) caused the index to grow by 0.2%.
