Population
1. As at 1st July 2009, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,275,323 representing an increase of 6,469 persons and a growth rate of 0.5% over the population at 1st July 2008 (1,268,854).
2. Islandwise, the population as at 1st July 2009 was as follows:

The population density of the Republic of Mauritius was around 625 persons
per square kilometre as at 1st July 2009.
Vital Statistics
4. The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2009 was 7,873, i.e., 472 live births less than in 2008. Some 16,250 live births are forecast for the year 2009. The crude birth rate will be around 12.7 in 2009 compared to 12.9 in 2008.
5. There were 4,431 deaths registered during the first six months of 2009, about 205 more during the same period in 2008. About 9,040 deaths are expected for the year 2009 resulting in a crude death rate of around 7.1, as in 2008.
6. The number of infant deaths registered during the period January to June 2009 was 120 against 124 during the same period in 2008. About 238 infant deaths are forecast for the year 2009 resulting in an infant mortality rate of around 14.6, compared to 14.4 in 2008.
7. The number of still births registered during the first half of 2009 was 68 compared to 85 for the same period in 2008. Around 156 still births are expected during the year 2009 resulting in a still birth rate of 9.5 compared to 10.0 in 2008.
8. The number of marriages registered from January to June 2009 was 4,838
compared to 5,034 during the same period in 2008. About 11,184 marriages are
forecast for the year 2009. The crude marriage rate will be around 17.5 against
17.7 in 2008
