Highlights

1. Introduction
1.1 Below are the highlights of the results of the “Quarterly Survey of Employment” carried out at the end of June 2009 among Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE), consisting of enterprises, previously operating with an EPZ certificate and enterprises manufacturing goods for exports and holding a registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment.


2. Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE)
Number of enterprises
2.1 The number of enterprises at the end of the 2nd quarter of 2009 stood at 403 compared to 406 at the end of March 2009 and 407 at the end of June 2008. During the 2nd quarter of 2009, 12 enterprises closed down of which 5 in “Wearing apparel” and 2 in “Textile yarn and fabrics”.

2.2 During the 2nd quarter of 2009, total employment decreased by 613 from 58,679 at the end of March 2009 to 58,066 at the end of June 2009. Female employment fell by 120 and male employment by 493 respectively. Total employment includes 17,273 foreign workers, 248 more than the figures registered at the end of March 2009.


2.3 Compared to June 2008, the number of enterprises decreased by 4 and employment by 6,582. Male employment decreased by 2,469 while female employment fell by 4,113. In “Wearing apparel”, the most important group in the EOE, employment fell by 5,271.


Exports and Imports

2.4 EOE exports for the 2nd quarter of 2009 is estimated at Rs. 9,682 million, that is, 22.8% higher compared to the previous quarter and 6.2% higher compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008. During the 2nd quarter of 2009, exports to our main EOE markets indicate increases to the United States of America (+Rs 300 million or +35.0%) and decreases to the United Kingdom (-Rs. 137 million or -4.2%) and France (-Rs. 116 million or -6.0%) compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008.

2.5 EOE exports for the period January to June amounted to Rs. 17,567 million. Compared to the corresponding period of 2008, this represents an increase of Rs. 774 million or (+4.6%).

2.6 EOE imports during the 2nd quarter of 2009 was Rs. 4,222 million, representing a decrease of Rs. 733 million (-14.8%) compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008. Imports of raw materials decreased by
Rs. 671 million (-14.3%) and machinery and equipment by Rs. 62 million (-24.5%).


2.7 During the first semester of 2009, EOE imports amounted to Rs. 8,006 million compared to Rs. 10,963 million for the corresponding period of 2008, representing a decrease of Rs. 2,957 million (-27.0%).


2.8 It is to be noted that the above figures do not include transactions of the EOE with the Freeport. During the 2nd quarter of 2009, EOE sales to the Freeport amounted to Rs. 904 million compared to Rs. 1,081 million for the same period of 2008.
