Highlights

Change in employment from March 2008 to March 2009

1. Employment in large establishments decreased by 9,666 from 307,510 (197,362 males and 110,148 females) to 297,844 (191,742 males and 106,102 females).

2. Main changes in employment were registered in the following industry groups:
Manufacturing -10,744
Hotels and restaurants -1,725
Agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing -989
Real estate, renting and business activities +1,820
Wholesale & retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles,
personal and household goods +961
Financial intermediation +547
Education +519

3. Employment in the General Government Sector decreased by 518 from 73,386 (50,220 males and 23,166 females) to 72,868 (49,041 males and 23,827 females). Male employment decreased by 1,179 while female employment increased by 661.

4. Employment in large Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE) decreased by 9,755 from 66,782 (27,137 males and 39,645 females) to 57,027 (23,833 males and 33,194 females).

5. The number of foreign workers decreased by 3,157 from 22,864 (13,863 males and 9,001 females) to 19,707 (12,119 males and 7,588 females).

6. Overall average monthly earnings in large establishments increased by 16.7% from Rs.14,438 to Rs.16,849. A general upward trend was observed in all industry groups with highest increases in ‘Public administration and defence; compulsory social security’ (30.8%), ‘Education’ (29.3%) and ‘Health and social work’ (19.7%) mainly due to salary revision in the public sector following implementation of the PRB report in July 2008. ‘Hotels and restaurants’ also posted a significant increase (16.3%).

7. Average monthly earnings in the large EOE went up by 10.5% from Rs.7,881 to Rs.8,708.
