1. Sugar cane
At the end of June 2009, around 3,500 hectares under sugar cane for crop 2009 were harvested, yielding 278,481 tonnes of sugar cane and 24,876 tonnes of sugar. The corresponding figures for the same period in the year 2008 were 2,390 hectares, 175,275 tonnes of sugar cane and 15,289 tonnes of sugar respectively. The average extraction rate stood at 8.93% compared to 8.72% a year ago.
The latest estimate of the Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture for the production of sugar for the 2009 crop is 490,000 tonnes.
2. Tea
At the end of June 2009, area under tea plantation reached 721 hectares which was 2.9% higher when compared to the corresponding period of 2008:701 hectares.
3. Tobacco
Area harvested during the first semester of 2009 decreased by 9.6% from 94 hectares in 2008 to 85 hectares. Production of tobacco leaves increased by 12.1% from 116 tonnes to 130 tonnes.
4. Food crops
A total of 2,799 hectares under food crops was harvested during the first semester of 2009, representing an increase of 10.9% over the figure of 2,525 hectares for the first semester of 2008. As a result, the production went up by 19.0% from 32,107 tonnes to 38,193 tonnes.
5. Livestock
During the first six months of 2009, beef production was 902 tonnes, 13.7% higher than the production registered in the same period of 2008. Production from the slaughter of imported cattle increased by 13.2% and that of local production went up 40.0%.
Production of goat meat and mutton went up by 7.7%, while pork production decreased by 6.0%.
6. Poultry
The production of poultry expanded by 6.5% from 20,000 tonnes in the first semester 2008 to 21,300 tonnes in the corresponding period of 2009.
7. Fish
Fish production fell by 13.6% from 3,636 tonnes in the first half of 2008 to 3,143 tonnes for the same period of 2009. Fresh coastal fish catch increased by 14.1% while other catch decreased by 22.8%.
