Highlights


1. Expenditure
For the period July to Dec 2009, government expenditure on education was estimated at about Rs 4,208 million, representing 10.6 % of total expenditure.

2. Pre-primary
Pre-primary schools numbered 1,057 in March 2009 with an enrolment of 35,974 children (50% boys, 50% girls). The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 4-5) works out to 96% with an average of 14 pupils per teacher.

3. Primary
As at March 2009, there were 302 primary schools with 117,922 pupils (51% boys, 49% girls). Total staff comprised 8,090 persons with 4,080 General Purpose Teachers and 1,374 Oriental Language teachers. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 6-11) is 101% and the pupil/teacher ratio 29.

4. Secondary
I. Academic
At March 2009, there were 179 schools providing secondary education in the academic stream. The secondary school enrolment was 116,226 (48% boys, 52% girls) and the number of teachers was 7,564.The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 12-19) works out to 69% and the pupil/teacher ratio 15.

II. Pre-vocational
Pre-vocational education was dispensed in 131 schools in March 2009 with an enrolment of 8,033 students (64% boys, 36% girls) and 622 teaching staff. The pupil/teacher ratio was 13.

5. CPE, SC & HSC Results
Pass rate for Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) examination has increased from 66.2% in 2007 to 67.4% in 2008. For the Cambridge School Certificate (SC), percentage pass has decreased from 76.7 in 2007 to 76.5 in 2008. For the Cambridge Higher School Certificate (HSC), percentage pass increased from 77.8 to 78.7.

6. Tertiary Education
Tertiary level enrolment went up by 9.3%, from 35,023 in 2007 to 38,623 in 2008.
