Licences and registrations
The total number of licensed and registered activities in the island of Mauritius increased by 6% from 113,051 in June 2008 to 120,071 in June 2009.
The most important increases, during the reference period, were noted in the industry groups ‘Construction’ (16%), ‘Real estate, renting and business activities’ (14%) and ‘Hotels and restaurants’ (13%).
Business activities were concentrated mostly in the industry group ‘Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles, personal and household goods’(54%), followed by the group ‘Transport, storage and communications’(19%).
The number of business activities was higher in the rural areas (55%). Activities predominant in the rural regions were from the industry groups ‘Other community, social and personal service activities’ (66%) and ‘Hotels and restaurants’ (65%). On the other hand, activities from the industry groups ‘Health and social work’ (74%), ‘Real estate, renting and business activities’ (63%) and ‘Education’(56%) were found mostly in urban areas.
