1. Monthly index

Overall index

The PPI-A stood at 97.4 in September 2009, following decreases of 8.7% in July, 0.6% in August and 1.2% in September.

Sugar cane

The index for “Sugar cane” for the period July to September 2009 was 82.2 based on the provisional price of sugar for the 2009 crop (-13.9% over the 2008 crop). It is assumed that the same price prevails during the whole of the crop year. It is to be noted that the index may be revised at the end of June 2010 when the final price is available.

Other crop products

- In July 2009, the index for other crop products went down by 7.6% mainly due to decreases in the prices of fresh vegetables (-12.2%) and fruits (-11.9%).
- In August, the effects of decreases of 6.7% in the prices of fresh vegetables and 0.3% in the prices of flowers and ornamental plants caused the index to decrease by 3.1%.
- In September, consequent to lower prices of fresh vegetables (-6.7%) , fruits (-0.6%) and root crops (-0.2%), the index went down by 4.1%.

Animals and animal products

- In July 2009, the index for “Animals and animal products” decreased by 1.0 %. This was due to decreases in the prices of poultry (-1.7%) and pigs (-13.5%).
- The index remained unchanged in August.
- A decrease of 4.8% in the prices of eggs caused the index to fall by 1.1% in September.

2. Quarterly index

During the third quarter of 2009, the PPI-A decreased by 9.9% compared to the previous quarter. This was due to lower prices of sugar cane (-13.9%), fresh vegetables (-23.8%), poultry (-1.9%) and pigs (-13.5%) partially offset by increases in the prices of root crops (+24.9%), fruits (+1.6%), flowers and ornamental plants (+0.3%), eggs (+3.4%), cattle (+3.8%) and goat (+1.9%).

Compared to the third quarter of 2008, the index fell down by 6.7%.

3. Yearly index

In 2008 producer prices of agricultural products were on the average 6.1% higher than in 2007.
