Introduction
1.1 Below are the highlights of the results of the “Quarterly Survey
of Employment” carried out at the end of September 2009 among Export
Oriented Enterprises (EOE), consisting of enterprises, previously operating
with an EPZ certificate and enterprises manufacturing goods for exports and
holding a registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment.
2. Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE)
Number of enterprises
2.1 The number of enterprises at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2009 stood
at 414 compared to 403 at the end of June 2009 and 413 at the end of September
2008. During the 3rd quarter of 2009, 9 enterprises closed down of which 4
in “Wearing apparel” and 3 in “Flowers”.
Employment evolution
2.2 During the 3rd quarter of 2009, total employment increased by 817 from
58,066 at the end of June 2009 to 58,883 at the end of September 2009. Male
and female employment increased by 308 and 509 respectively. Total employment
includes 17,793 foreign workers, 520 more than the figures registered at the
end of June 2009.
2.3 Compared to September 2008, the number of enterprises increased by 1 and
employment decreased by 3,945. Male employment went down by 1,149 and female
employment by 2,796. In “Wearing apparel”, the most important
group in the EOE, employment decreased by 3,448.
Exports and Imports
2.4 EOE exports for the 3rd quarter of 2009 are estimated at Rs. 9,088 million, that is, 6.1% lower compared to the previous quarter and 2.3% higher compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008. During the 3rd quarter of 2009, exports to our main EOE markets indicate increases to the United States of America (+Rs. 196 million or +20.5%) and to France (+Rs. 253 million or +18.0%) and a decrease to the United Kingdom (-Rs. 508 million or -15.1%) compared to the corresponding quarter of 2008.
2.5 EOE exports
for the period January to September amounted to Rs. 26,655 million. Compared
to the corresponding period of 2008, this represents an increase of Rs. 974
million or (+3.8%).
2.6 EOE imports during the 3rd quarter of 2009 were Rs. 5,072 million, representing
an increase of Rs. 459 million (+10.0%) compared to the corresponding quarter
of 2008. Imports of raw materials increased by
Rs. 367 million (+8.3%) and that of machinery and equipment by Rs. 92 million
(+46.9%).
2.7 During the first nine months of 2009, EOE imports amounted to Rs. 13,078
million compared to Rs. 15,576 million for the corresponding period of 2008,
representing a decrease of Rs. 2,498 million (-16.0%).
2.8 It is to be noted that the above figures do not include transactions of
the EOE with the Freeport. During the first nine month of 2009, EOE sales
to the Freeport amounted to Rs. 1,326 million compared to Rs. 1,478 million
for the same period of 2008.
