SOCIAL SECURITY STATISTICS
2003/2004 – 2008/2009
Highlights – Republic of Mauritius

1. Government expenditure on Social Security and Welfare rose from Rs 8,852 million in 2003/2004 to Rs 14,465 million in 2008/2009, showing an increase of around 63.4%.
2. The number of beneficiaries of Basic Retirement Pension, that is persons aged 60 years and over, increased by 18.5% from 119,448 in June 2004 to 141,582 in June 2009. The total amount paid by government to all old-age pensioners was Rs 5,659 million in 2008/2009 compared to Rs 3,157 million in 2003/2004.
3. There were 22,596 Basic Widow’s Pensioners in June 2009 compared to 22,757 in June 2004, showing a slight decrease of about 0.7%. However, the amount disbursed increased from Rs 610 million in 2003/2004 to Rs 840 million in 2008/2009.
4. The number of Basic Invalid’s Pensioners increased by 8.5%, from 25,035 in June 2004 to 27,169 in June 2009. The total amount disbursed rose from Rs 806 million in 2003/2004 to Rs 1,209 million in 2008/2009.
5. The number of beneficiaries of Basic Orphan’s Pension decreased from 529 in June 2004 to 353 in June 2009. However, expenditure on Basic Orphan’s Pension and Guardian’s allowance rose from Rs 14 million in 2003/2004 to Rs 22 million in 2008/2009.
6. In June 2009, 17,180 families benefited from Social Aid compared to 16,346 in June 2004. The amount paid increased from Rs 295 million in 2003/2004 to Rs 457 million in 2008/2009.
7. It is expected that the number of beneficiaries of Basic Retirement Pension, which was around 141,582 in June 2009 will almost treble to reach 355,000 in forty years. Likewise, based on the same rate as applicable in 2008/09, the amount to be disbursed in 2048/2049 will also nearly treble and amount to Rs 14.7 billion compared to Rs 5.7 billion in 2008/2009.
