January - June 2010 – Highlights

1. At end of June 2010, 374,547 vehicles were registered at the National Transport Authority compared to 366,520 at the end of December 2009, i.e. an increase of 8,027 or 2.2%.

2. Between January to June 2010, some 10,489 vehicles joined the fleet while 2,462 were put out of circulation.

3. The fleet consisted largely of cars and dual-purpose vehicles (169,772 or 45%) and motorized two-wheelers (155,884 or 42%). The remaining 13% comprised vans, lorries and trucks, buses and other vehicles.

4. During January to June 2010, the number of road accidents increased by 10.0% to 11,227 compared to 10,211 during the corresponding period of 2009. Among these accidents, 65 were fatal (caused death) against 64 during the corresponding period of 2009.

5. The total number of vehicles (motor and non-motorised) involved in road accidents during the period January to June 2010 was 20,050, that is, 158 or 0.8% more than the figure of 19,892 during the same period of 2009.

6. The number of casualties decreased by 2.2% to 1,821 during the period January to June 2010 compared to 1,862 for the period January to June of 2009. Among the casualties, around 35% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 29% passengers, 18% pedestrians, 14% drivers and 4% pedal cyclists.

7. During the first semester of 2010, 70 persons died as a result of road accidents against 67 during the corresponding period of 2009, showing an increase of 4.5%. However, the number of seriously injured persons decreased by 1.1% from 284 to 281 and that of slightly injured by 2.7% from 1,511 to 1,470.
