Population

1. As at 1st July 2010, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,281,214 representing an increase of 5,893 persons and a growth rate of 0.5% over the population at 1st July 2009 (1,275,321).

2. Islandwise, the population as at 1st July 2010 was as follows:

3. The population density of the Republic of Mauritius was around 628 persons per square kilometre as at 1st July 2010.

Vital Statistics

4. The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2010 was 7,835, i.e., 38 live births less than in January to June 2009. Some 15,365 live births are forecast for the year 2010. The crude birth rate will be 12.0 in 2010, same as in 2009.

5. There were 4,292 deaths registered during the first six months of 2010, about 141 less than in 2009. About 8,942 deaths are expected for the year 2010 resulting in a crude death rate of 7.0, as compared to 7.2 in 2009.

6. The number of infant deaths registered during the period January to June 2010 was 107 against 117 during the same period in 2009. About 202 infant deaths are forecast for the year 2010 resulting in an infant mortality rate of 13.1, compared to 13.4 in 2009.

7. The number of still births registered during the first half of 2010 was 54 compared to 68 for the same period in 2009. Around 108 still births are expected during the year 2010 resulting in a still birth rate of 7.0 compared to 8.9 in 2009.

8. The number of marriages registered from January to June 2010 was 4,548 compared to 4,839 during the same period in 2009. About 10,095 marriages are forecast for the year 2010. The crude marriage rate will be around 15.8 against 16.7 in 2009.
