Highlights

1. Sugar

The production of sugar cane went down by 6.5% from 4,667,234 tonnes in 2009 to 4,365,852 tonnes in 2010. This is mostly explained by a reduction of 2.7% in the area harvested from 60,380 hectares in 2009 to 58,755 hectares in 2010 and a drop of 4.0% in the yield of sugar cane per hectare from 77.3 tonnes to 74.3 tonnes.

2. Tea

Area under tea plantation in 2010 was 698 hectares, less by 2.1% over the figure of 713 hectares in 2009. The production of green tea leaves fell by 3.8% from 7,663 tonnes in 2009 to 7,370 tonnes in 2010, resulting in a decrease of 0.9% in the production of manufactured tea from 1,481 tonnes to 1,467 tonnes.

3. Tobacco

Area harvested in 2010 went down by 10.3% from 234 hectares in 2009 to 210 hectares in 2010. Consequently, the production of tobacco leaves decreased by 10.2% from 314 tonnes in 2009 to 282 tonnes in 2010.

4. Food crops

Area harvested under food crops went down by 2.7% from 7,083 hectares in 2009 to 6,895 hectares in 2010. As a result the production of food crops decreased by 8.1% from 113,943 tonnes in 2009 to 104,749 tonnes in 2010.

5. Livestock

Beef production increased by 5.0% to attain 2,194 tonnes in 2010 compared to 2,090 tonnes in 2009. Production from the slaughter of imported and local cattle rose by 2.5% and 144.4% respectively.

Production of goat meat and mutton decreased by 11.7% to reach 68 tonnes in 2010, while that of pork rose by 45.6%.

6. Poultry

Production of poultry increased by 4.5% from 44,000 tonnes in 2009 to 46,000 tonnes in 2010.

7. Fish

Total fish production in 2010 went down by 19.1% to 5,647 tonnes, from 6,978 tonnes in 2009. Fresh coastal fish catch decreased by 2.6% while other catch (tuna, bank etc) by 26.5%.
