Price Index – 3rd Quarter 2011
Highlights
1. The Construction Price Index, which stood at 104.4 as at June 2011, increased by 0.8 % or 0.8 point during the 3rd quarter of 2011 to reach 105.2 in September 2011.
2. On a monthly basis, the index registered a drop of 0.1% in July 2011 followed by increases of 0.6% in August and 0.2% in September 2011.
3. The 0.1% drop in July 2011 was mainly due to decreases of 0.9% in the prices of steel bars partly offset by higher rates for hire of plant (0.3%) and an increase in the prices of electrical installation (0.2%). In August 2011, the increase of 0.6% is mostly explained by higher prices of cement (3.4%), steel bars (0.9%), timber joinery (3.6%), adhesive (1.8%) and sanitary installation (1.3%). In September 2011, a 0.2% increase was registered mainly due to increases in the prices of cement (0.3%), steel bars (0.8%), block (0.7%) and higher rates for hire of plants (0.3%) partly offset by a decrease of 0.2% in timber carpentry.
4. As a consequence of the above changes, the “Materials” sub-index decreased by 0.1% from 104.8 in June 2011 to 104.7 in July 2011, followed by increases of 1.0% and 0.3% to reach 105.7 in August and 106.0 in September 2011.
5. The “Hire of Plant” sub-index which stood at 101.0 in June 2011 increased by 0.3% in July to 101.3, registered no changes in August followed by 0.3% increase in September to reach 101.7.
6. The “Labour” and “Transport” sub-indices remained unchanged in during the quarter.
