Highlights
Licences and registrations
1. The total number of licensed and registered activities in the island of Mauritius increased by around 4% from 128,145 in June 2010 to 133,193 in June 2011. During the same period, the highest growth rate in the number of business activities was registered in the industry group ‘Health and social work’ (19%), followed by ‘Construction’ (8%), ‘Real estate, renting and business activities’ (6%) and ‘Manufacturing’ (6%).
2. In June 2011, the industry group ‘Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles, personal and household goods’ had the greatest number of business activities (55%), followed by ‘Transport, storage and communications’ (17%).
3. The number of business activities was higher in rural (73,163 or 55%) than in urban areas (60,030 or 45%). This is true for all industry groups except ‘Health and social work’ (with 67% of activities in urban regions), ‘Real estate, renting and business activities’ (61%), ‘Education’ (56%) and ‘Financial intermediation’ (52%).
