Price Index – 4th Quarter 2011
Highlights
1. The Construction Price Index, which stood at 105.2 as at September 2011, increased by 0.3% or 0.3 point during the 4th quarter of 2011 to reach 105.5 in December 2011.
2. On a monthly basis, the index registered an increase of 0.2% in October 2011, remained unchanged in November 2011 and increased by 0.1% in December 2011.
3. The 0.2% increase in October 2011 was mainly due to increases of 1.8% in the prices of steel bars and 0.2% in timber carpentry partly offset by decreases of 0.7% in the rate of hire of plants, 0.1% in the prices of cement and 1.4% in the prices of ceramic tiles. In November 2011, the index remained at the same level following an increase of 0.4% in the prices of cement offset by a decrease of 2.8% in the prices of ceramic tiles. The 0.1% increase in December 2011 was the result of an increase in the prices of cement (0.7%) and timber joinery (0.5%) mitigated by decreases of 0.2% in the prices of steel bars and 0.3% in the prices of sanitary installations.
4. As a consequence of the above changes, the “Materials” sub-index increased by 0.3% from 106.0 in September 2011 to 106.3 in October 2011, remained at the same level in November 2011 and increased by 0.1% in December 2011 to reach 106.4.
5. The “Hire of Plant” sub-index which stood at 101.7 in September 2011 decreased by 0.7% in October 2011 to 101.0 and remained unchanged up to December 2011.
6. The “Labour” and “Transport” sub-indices remained unchanged during the quarter.
