Agricultural and Fish production: Year 2011

Highlights

1. Sugar cane

The production of sugar cane went down by 3.1% from 4,365,833 tonnes in 2010 to 4,230,173 tonnes in 2011. This is mostly explained by a reduction of 3.5% in the area harvested from 58,709 hectares in 2010 to 56,639 hectares in 2011. The yield of sugar cane has increased by 0.4%, from 74.4 tonnes per hectare in 2010 to 74.7 in 2011.

Sugar production dropped by 3.8% from 452,473 tonnes in 2010 to 435,309 tonnes in 2011. The average extraction rate was 10.30% in 2011 compared to 10.37% in 2010, representing a decrease of 0.7%.

2. Tea

The production of green tea rose by 21.8% from 7,370 tonnes in 2010 to 8,975 tonnes in 2011, resulting in an increase of 21.8% in the production of manufactured tea from 1,467 tonnes to 1,787 tonnes.

3. Tobacco

Area harvested in 2011 went up by 4.2% from 213 hectares in 2010 to 222 hectares. Consequently, the production of tobacco leaves increased by 11.3% from 310 tonnes in 2010 to 345 tonnes in 2011.

4. Food crops

Area harvested under food crops went down by 2.7% from 7,570 hectares in 2010 to 7,364 hectares in 2011, however the production of food crops increased by 0.7% from 114,844 tonnes in 2010 to 115,618 tonnes in 2011.

5. Livestock

Beef production decreased by 7.8% from 2,194 tonnes in 2010 to 2,023 tonnes in 2011. Production from the slaughter of local cattle rose by 54.5% while that of imported decreased by 10.4%.

Production of goat meat and mutton decreased by 8.8% to reach 62 tonnes in 2011, while that of pork rose by 4.3%.

6. Poultry

Production of poultry increased by 0.9% from 46,600 tonnes in 2010 to 47,000 tonnes in 2011.

7. Fish

Total fish production in 2011 went down by 2.5% to 5,411 tonnes, from 5,547 tonnes in 2010. Fresh coastal fish catch increased by 3.8% while other catch (tuna, bank etc) decreased by 6.2%.
