Highlights
1. Introduction
Below are the highlights of the results of the “Quarterly Survey of Employment” carried out at the end of December 2011 among Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE). EOE consist of enterprises previously operating with an EPZ certificate as well as those manufacturing goods for exports and holding a registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment.
2. Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE)
4th Quarter 2011
2.1.
During the 4th quarter of 2011:
(a) the number of EOE decreased from 361 to 356 due to the closure of 5 enterprises
of which 2 were in “Jewellery and related articles”;
(b) total employment in EOE decreased by 90 (-0.2%) from 55,740 to 55,650. However employment of foreign workers increased by 397 from 18,163 to 18,560;
(c) there were 701 job creations and 791 job losses of which 765 were due to contraction of the workforce in existing enterprises and 26 due to the closure of 5 enterprises;
(d) EOE exports amounted to Rs. 11,113 million, 3.7% lower than in the 3rd quarter of 2011 and 2.7% lower than in the corresponding quarter of 2010.
Year 2011
2.2. During the year 2011:
(a)
the number of EOE went down by16 from 372 to 356. This is explained by 15
new enterprises and 31 closures;
(b) total employment decreased by 178 from 55,828 to 55,650 due to 3,438 job
creations and 3,616 job losses;
(c)
employment fell by 454 in the “Wearing apparel” group and by 124
in “Electric and electronic products.
On the other hand, employment went up in “Food” (+104) and “Other”
product groups (+377);
(d) EOE exports amounted to Rs. 44,985 million, representing an increase of 8.1% over the figure of Rs. 41,622 million for 2010;
(e)
there was an increase in exports to our main markets, namely: United States
of America (+Rs. 466 million
or +8.0%), France (+ Rs. 240 million or +3.0%) and the United Kingdom (+Rs.
109 million or +0.9%).
