1. Monthly index

Overall index

The Producer Price Index–Agriculture, which was 108.1 in December 2011, went up by 2.6% to reach 110.9 in March 2012. This rise was due to the combined effects of a decrease of 1.1% in January followed by increases of 1.4% and 2.3% in February and March respectively.

Sugar cane

The index for “Sugar cane” for the period July 2011 to March 2012 was 87.6 based on the provisional price of sugar for the 2011 crop. This represents an increase of 18.2% over the 2010 crop. It is assumed that the same price prevails during the whole of the crop year. It is to be noted that the index may be revised at the end of June 2012 when the final price for the 2011 crop is available.

Other crop products

- In January 2012, the index for “Other crop products” decreased by 9.0% mainly due to a 16.5% decrease in the prices of fresh vegetables.
- In February 2012, the index rose by 6.2% largely as a result of increases in the prices of fresh vegetables (+19.2%), partly offset by a decrease of 16.3% in the prices of fruits.
- In March 2012, the index went up by 13.9% as a consequence of higher prices of fresh vegetables (+20.8%).

Animals and animal products

- In January 2012, the index for “Animals and animal products” went up by 2.0%. This was mainly due to increases in the prices of poultry (+2.1%) and eggs (+2.2%).
- In February 2012, the index increased by 0.8% due to increases in the prices of poultry (+1.0%) and eggs (+0.3%).
- In March 2012, the index dropped by 1.4% as a consequence of decreases in the prices of poultry (-1.8%) and eggs (-0.6%).


2. Quarterly index

During the first quarter of 2012, PPI-A increased by 0.8% compared to the previous quarter. This was due to higher prices of animals and animal products (+3.6%), fruits (+7.6%) and flowers, ornamental plants (+0.8%), partly offset by lower prices of fresh vegetables (-2.2%) and root crops (-7.6%).

Compared to the first quarter of 2011, the index increased by 7.4 %.

3. Yearly index

In 2011, producer prices of agricultural products were on average 5.1% higher compared to 2010.
