Survey of Employment and Earnings in large establishments

 

GIS - Sept 22: A total of 290,600 people were employed in large establishments in Mauritius as at  March 2005, says the latest issue of the Economic Indicators.

 

Preliminary results of the Survey of Employment and Earnings in Large Establishments carried out by the Central Statistics Office show that employment in large establishments decreased by 4,800  from 295,400  in March 2004 to 290,600 in March 2005.  Analysis by gender shows that male employment decreased by 1,500 from 189,400 in 2004 to 187,900 in 2005. Female employment also decreased by 3,300 from 106,000 to 102,700 during the same period.

 

As regards employment in the large EPZ establishments, the number of persons employed fell  by around 9,500 from 75,500 in March 2004 to 66,000 in March 2005. As at March 2005, there were 24,400 male employees and 41,600 female employees in the sector.

 

Employment in the general government sector ( both central and local governments) stood at 73,400 in March 2005 compared to 72,400 in the corresponding period in 2004.  Some 51,900 males and 21,500 females were employed in the general government sector in 2005.

 

In March 2005, there were 16,200 foreign workers compared to 18,100 in 2004. These workers were mainly engaged in the manufacturing establishments.

 

Average monthly earnings in large establishments stood at Rs 12,100 in March 2005 compared to Rs 11,100 in March 2004.  In the EPZ sector, the average monthly earnings was Rs 6,700 in March 2005 compared to Rs 6,200 in March 2004.
