Functions

The Civil Status Division is mainly responsible for the registration of births, deaths,marriages and other matters relating to the civil status of persons in Mauritius and for the issue of civil status certificates.


 

Legislation

The main legislation which provides for the functioning of civil status offices  is the Civil  Status (Amendment) Act,  1981,  which  came  into force  on the 1 January 1982  and the Code Civil  Mauritian  which  lays down  the conditions which  have  to be satisfied before a person under 18 years, can contract marriage. With the introduction of computerized operations, it is compulsory to produce the National Identity Card for every civil status transaction.
