Services

The Civil Status Division is responsible for the registration of births, deaths and marriages and other matters relating to the civil status of persons in Mauritius and for the issue of civil status certificates.
Since 01 November 2001, a Computerized Registration System is operational on a pilot basis.
Laser-printed certificates of birth, death and marriage are issued on A4 format in English and French language at computerized offices.

Civil Status Certificates

Extracts of civil status certificates may be applied for either at the Central Civil Status Office in Port Louis or at the Civil Status Office where the event was registered.


Any person may on production of a stamp to the value of Rs25 obtain a copy of the entry relating to:


-the declaration of his birth;

  • the declaration of the birth of his spouse or of any of his ascendants or descendants -the registration of :-
  • his marriage
  • a previous marriage of his spouse;
  • the marriage of any of his ascendants or descendants;
  • any declaration of death other than the first manuscript
    The first issue of a birth, death and marriage certificates is free of charge.

Such certificates may be obtained instantly at computerized offices.

  • Laser-printed certificates of birth are delivered on the same day or after a minimum period of 3 days at the Central Civil Status Office and at any computerised office.
  • No fee is payable for the issue of civil status certificates.

Application for Certificates from non-residents

Subject to providing proof of identity, persons residing abroad may apply for civil status certificates. To enable searches to be carried out, an indicative date and place of the birth/death /marriage should be given on application.

Fees
An International Postal order amounting
to £5 or 6 Euro drawn to the order of the Government of Mauritius is required for each certificate applied for.

Exchange rate

All transactions concerning postal orders must be done taking into consideration
the
exchange rate.

 

Issue of National Identity Card

Eligibility

Every person who is a citizen of Mauritius shall, within
6 months of attaining the age of 18 and on such form as prescribed,
apply for an identity card at the designated office nearest to his locality.

 

National Identity Cards are available instantly on production of the following documents:-

First Issue

  Application Form duly filled in.
  Printed Birth certificate
  Certificate of Registration as a citizen of Mauritius or Certificate of Naturalisation (if applicable)
  Marriage certificate (for married woman)
 

In case of loss

A Police Memorandum should additionally be produced.

Fees

All first issues are free of charge.

For all other issues a fee of Rs. 100. - is applicable.

For  persons  aged  60  and  above  a  fee of Rs. 50.- is payable in case of  loss only.
