Our Vision

  • To be a key provider of world-class statistical information.

Our  Mission

  • To provide coherent, timely, relevant and reliable statistics, consistent with international principles and standards, for effective policy and decision-making, and for monitoring national development processes.

Our structure:

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) is a government department operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development. The office is headed by the Director of Statistics and comprises three divisions namely the Economic division, the Social division and the Logistics and Research division.

The Head Office is located at the LIC Centre, John Kennedy Street, Port Louis. Staff are also posted in statistics units servicing various Ministries.

Our mode of operation

We collect data through censuses, sample surveys and administrative records.

The data are then compiled, analysed and disseminated. We also collaborate with Ministries and other Government departments in the collection, compilation, analysis, publication and dissemination of statistical information.

We collect data only where there is a justified need to do so.

We ensure the confidentiality of individual information.

We produce statistics on:

  • Agricultural production
  • Co-operatives
  • Education

We release more detailed statistics through comprehensive statistical reports and digests.

To maximize the use of data collected by the CSO, bona fide researchers are allowed access to anonymised records under strict conditions that ensure confidentiality of the data.

A variety of our statistical information, including all our publications, are posted on our website at    http://statsmauritius.gov.mu where they can be accessed free of charge.

You can purchase a copy of our publications at the office. Our Economic and Social Indicators can be purchased at Rs 30 each. The prices of other regular publications range from Rs 50 to Rs 600.

Customised tables can be made available upon request and are charged at a rate that enables us to recover the production costs incurred for generating the tables, excluding the cost of collecting and compiling the data.

Get our statistics right

In order to ensure good quality and international comparability of our data, we adhere to standard concepts, definitions and classifications as recommended by international organisations such as the U.N. agencies.

Confidentiality

The CSO operates under the Statistics Act No. 38 of 2000 which requires that any individual information is treated as strictly confidential, and that no information is released that might enable identification of an individual or establishment.

Besides, all our staff make a declaration of secrecy that they will not divulge any individual information.
