Below are the highlights of the results of the “Quarterly Survey of Employment” carried out at the end of March 2012 among Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE). EOE consist of enterprises previously operating with an EPZ certificate as well as those manufacturing goods for exports and holding a registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment.
2. Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE)
During the 1st quarter of 2012:
(a) the number of EOE decreased from 356 to 354 due to the closure of 2 enterprises engaged in manufacture of “Wearing apparel”;
(b) total employment in EOE decreased by 523 (-0.9%) from 55,650 to 55,127, resulting mainly in a decline in the number of Mauritian workers while employment of foreign workers remained stable;
(c) there were 1,077 job creations and 1,600 job losses of which 1,503 were due to contraction of the workforce in existing enterprises and 97 due to the closure of 2 enterprises; and
(d) EOE exports amounted to Rs. 10,880 million, 2.1% lower compared to the previous quarter and 3.9% higher compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011.
