Below are the highlights of the results of the “Quarterly Survey of Employment” carried out at the end of June 2012 among Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE). EOE consist of enterprises previously operating with an EPZ certificate as well as those manufacturing goods for exports and holding a registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment.
2. Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE)
During the 2nd quarter of 2012:
(a) The number of EOE decreased from 354 to 344 due to the closures of 5 enterprises engaged in the manufacture of “Wearing apparel”, 3 in “Jewellery and related articles” and 2 in “Wood and paper products”;
(b) Total employment in EOE decreased by 563 (-1.0%) from 55,127 to 54,564, as a result of a decrease of 547 in the number of Mauritian workers while employment of foreign workers increased marginally by 16;
(c) There were 1,302 job creations and 1,865 job losses of which 756 were due to contraction of the workforce in existing enterprises and 1,109 due to the closure of 10 enterprises; and
(d) EOE exports amounted to Rs. 11,619 million, 6.8% higher compared to the previous quarter and 2.0% lower compared to the second quarter of 2011.
