Port Louis Water Supply System

This System serves the capital city and its immediate suburbs. It caters for the daily potable water needs of a resident population of 130,000, a commuting public of 70,000, some light manufacturing industries, commercial enterprises and government departments and institutions.

Pailles Treatment Plant, a slow sand filter plant, with a treatment capacity of 60,000 m³/day.

District Water Supply System - North

The system caters for the potable water needs of Households and economic operators in the Northern Districts.

System Characteristics

  • Service area covered = 337 km²
  • Population served = 307,675
  • Number of Accounts = 61,535

A newly constructed rapid gravity treatment plant of 66,000 m³/day capacity, at La Nicolière.

District Water Supply System - East

This system caters for the potable water supply needs of Households and other economic operators of the eastern region.

System Characteristics

  • Service area covered = 232 km²
  • Population served =150,000
  • Number of Accounts = 38,656

  • Piton du Milieu Reservoir
  • Groundwater abstraction

Normal Production - 72,000 m³ daily

  • Surface water = 28%
  • Groundwater = 72%

Treatment Plant

Piton du Milieu Treatment Plant is a rapid gravity treatment plant. First Phase constructed in 1955 with filtration capacity of 17,000 m³/day. With the implementation of the Phase II, the treatment capacity has been increased to 30,000 m³/day. Phase III was completed in 2000,thus bringing the total treatment capacity of the plant to 37,000 m³/day.

District Water Supply System - South

System Characteristics

This system caters to the potale water needs of the population and economic operators of the districts of Savanne and Grand Port.

  • System area = 220 km²
  • Population served = 210,000

Mont Blanc Treatment Plant (1995) is a rapid gravity treatment plant with a total treatment capacity of 11,000 m³/day.

Mare aux Vacoas Water Supply System - Upper

System Characteristics  

This system caters to the potable water supply for the central part of the island covering the following regions: Forest Side, Curepipe, Floreal, Vacoas, Mesnil, up to Highlands, Moka, St. Pierre Nouvelle Decouverte, Alma, Quartier Militaire.

  • System area : 220 km²
  • Population served : 220,000
  • Number of Accounts : 52,091

  • Mare aux Vacoas Reservoir
  • Ground water abstraction

Normal production = 114,000 m³/day

  • Surface water = 77%
  • Groundwater = 23%

Treatment Plant

La Marie Treatment Plant is the oldest slow sand treatment plant in operation. It came into operation around March, 1888. The total treatment capacity is 60,000 m³/day. The Treatment plant has recently been refurbished. There is a now a new rapid gravity filtration plant of 70,000 m³/day capacity.  The total treatment capacity of the slow sand and rapid sand filters is 130,000 m3/day.

Mare aux Vacoas Water Supply System - Lower

System Characteristics

This system caters for potable water supply to Lower Plaines Wilhems and includes the Cities of Quatre Bornes and Beau Bassin -Rose Hill and the rural areas in the Black River District.

System Characteristics

  • System area = 200 km²
  • Population Served = 227,000
  • Number of Accounts = 51,000

Main water Sources

  • Ground water Sources (Curepipe Aquifer)

Normal production : 110,000 m³/day

Groundwater = 82%; suplemented with surface water from MaV (Upper) when necessary.
