The right to know what personal data is held about us, and to ensure that these data are used in accordance with the law, is a key human right for all of us. The Data Protection Commissioner is responsible for upholding the rights of individuals, as they are set out in the DPA, and for enforcing the obligations imposed upon data controllers. The Commissioner is appointed by the Public Service Commission and also makes an annual report to the National Assembly. Individuals who feel their rights are being infringed upon can complain to the Commissioner, who will investigate the matter, and take whatever steps necessary to resolve it.
