Cyclone and other Natural Disaster Scheme

Objectives

Objectives

The general responsibilities of the Prime Minister’s Office in case of disasters are to coordinate and control relief measures. The cyclone and other Natural Disasters Scheme provides for the setting up of a Central Cyclone Committee under the chairmanship of the Secretary for Home Affairs with a view to

(a) reviewing the scheme;

(b) finalising the list of Cyclone refugee Centres

(c) issuing instructions in respect of preparedness, relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction works.

A Task Force, a committee of top officials, ensures that immediately after a cyclone, information on the general situation throughout the country is made available to a Ministerial Cyclone Committee so that urgent action is taken to implement the decisions of the Committee and that there is a flow of information and instructions to the heads of Ministries/departments primarily concerned with relief work and reconstruction after the passage of a cyclone.
