Fisheries - Fisheries Management Division
GOAL
• To develop and manage the Fisheries and Marine Resources of the country in order to obtain the optimum sustainable yield for the benefit of the people of the country.
• To facilitate import and export of fish and fish products and to provide a rapid and efficient service to fishing vessels calling at Port Louis for various activities.
• To monitor fishing vessels operating in our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
KEY PRIORITIES
• To encourage local and foreign operators to develop and exploit in a sustainable manner the fisheries resources of the country.
• To provide the necessary information concerning different types of fisheries and give advice for new comers to the Fishing Industry
• Provide a quick service regarding transshipment by fishing vessels, import and export of seafood through the one-stop shop (Seafood Hub).
• To ensure a constant monitoring of the activities of licenced local and foreign fishing vessels in our EEZ through the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS).
• To control the import and export of fish and fish products including live aquarium fish.
• To ensure that wholesome quality fish/fish products are put up for sale on the local market.
OBJECTIVES
• To provide an efficient service in the rapid delivery of fishing licences.
• To issue clearances for departures of semi-industrial vessels
• To monitor and manage the fishery resources
• Monitor entry into the different fisheries through the issue licences for local and foreign vessels.
• Enforce licence conditions
• Monitor the movement and activities of local fishing vessels.
• Monitor the activities of foreign fishing vessels calling at Port Louis.
• Monitor licenced local and foreign fishing vessels operating in our EEZ through the Vessel Monitoring System.
• To ensure that the conditions set up by this Ministry with regards to the import/export of fish/fish products are being respected.
• Provide the necessary information to potential importers/exporters and to prospective entrepreneurs willing to invest on trade of fish and fish and fish products including live ornamental fish.
• Issue of import & export permits to importers & exporters of fish/fish products and live aquarium fish.
• To protect and advise consumers of fish and fish products.
SERVICES PROVIDED
• Fishing licenses to local fishing vessels involved in the chilled fish fishery and the banks fishery.
• Fishing licenses to foreign fishing vessels to fish in our EEZ.
• Clearances for departures for fishing trips to vessels in the chilled fish fishery.
• Import permits.
• Export permits
• Inspection and clearance for imported fish and fish products at ports of entry.
• Quarantine clearance for imported live fish.
• Clearance for unloading/transshipment for fishing vessels calling at Port Louis.
• Export clearance for fish and fish products.
