| The Mauritius Assay Office was initially established under the Jewellery Act 1999 to control and regulate the manufacture, sale and importation of jewellery made of gold or its alloy. The act had been reviewed and consolidated so as to make better provision for the regulation and control of the manufacture, sale and importation of jewellery made of gold, silver and platinum or their alloys and also of precious and semi-precious stones. The Jewellery Act 2007 was proclaimed on 09 May 2008. The Assay Office operates a management system in line with MS ISO 9001:2000. The Assaying Laboratory is accredited with MAURITAS to ISO 17025 and follows rigorous Quality Assurance and Quality Control process. It is the first public laboratory which has been accredited to Mauritas. |
| Services The Assay Office offers the following services: - Assaying (testing) of gold, silver, platinum and their alloys for jewellers, members of the public and government institutions
- Registration of dealers in jewellery
- Issuing and registration of Sponsor’s and Importer’s marks
- Registration of identification marks
- Marking facilities with the State Mark for gold jewellery of 18 carat (750 ppt) and 22 carat (916 ppt) at the request of jewellers
- Authorisation of jewellers to apply the State mark on their business premises
- Investigation of complaints from public
- Operating a documentation centre which provides a wide selection of periodicals, magazines and other relevant literature on jewellery to the business community.
- Sensitisation campaigns for consumers of jewellery.

| Aims & Objectives | The aims and objectives of this organisation are to - Register all dealers of jewellery and precious and semi-precious stones
- Ensure compliance with the Jewellery Act 2007 by carrying out inspection visits on trade premises of dealers in jewellery
- Offer assaying facilities according to ISO/IEC 17025 Standard and internationally recognised methods
- Provide support services to the jewellery sector to upgrade the quality of their jewellery
- Investigate complaints made by consumers regarding quality, purchase, sale and repairs of jewellery

| Jewellery Act | The Jewellery Act 2007 The Act makes provision for: - Regulation and control of manufacture, sale, importation and display of jewellery made of gold, silver or platinum and of their alloys;
- Verification and grading of precious and semi-precious stones;
- Authorisation for applying the State Mark by jewellers on their business premises; and
- Acceding the Convention on the Control and Marking of Precious Metals, commonly referred to as the Hallmarking Convention.
