| The Assay Office is the body responsible to implement the Jewellery Act 2007. The Act regulates and controls the manufacture, sale and importation of jewellery made of gold, silver and platinum or their alloys, and the identification and grading of gemstones. The Assay Office is certified to ISO 9001 and is a member of the International Association of Assay Offices (IAAO). |
| Services The Assay Office offers the following services: -
Testing of gold, silver and platinum jewellery and their alloys. -
Identification of precious and semi-precious stones. -
Registration of any person or company dealing in gold, silver and platinum jewellery, and gemstones. -
Registration of Sponsor’s, Importer’s and Identification marks. -
Marking of gold jewellery with the State mark at the request of jewellers. -
Sensitisation campaigns for consumers of jewellery. -
Helping jewellers upgrade the quality of their jewellery. -
Investigation of complaints from public. -
Operating a documentation centre which provides a wide selection of periodicals, magazines and other relevant literature on jewellery to the business community. Quality Objectives -
Cupellation results are issued within three working days from the date of receipt of a sample. -
X-Ray and Touchstone results are issued within one working day of receipt of a sample. -
Issue certificate of registration within 2 days. -
Registration of Sponsor’s mark within 30 minutes The Assay Office operates two laboratories namely the Assay Laboratory and the Gemmology Laboratory. | Jewellery Act | The Jewellery Act 2007 The Act makes provision for: - Regulation and control of manufacture, sale, importation and display of jewellery made of gold, silver or platinum and of their alloys;
- Verification and grading of precious and semi-precious stones;
- Authorisation for applying the State Mark by jewellers on their business premises; and
- Acceding the Convention on the Control and Marking of Precious Metals, commonly referred to as the Hallmarking Convention.
