The Mauritius Assay Office was initially established under the Jewellery Act 1999 to control and regulate the manufacture, sale and importation of jewellery made of gold or its alloy.  The act had been reviewed and consolidated so as to make better provision for the regulation and control of the manufacture, sale and importation of jewellery made of gold, silver and platinum or their alloys and also of precious and semi-precious stones.   The Jewellery Act 2007 was proclaimed on 09 May 2008.
