Enforcing Agencies

The Department of Environment has been created as an institutional framework to address problems related to the protection, preservation and enhancement of the environment. It is a coordinating body with authority to coordinate all activities relating to the environment. In view of the numerous legislations controlling various environmental problems, the Environment Protection Act (EPA), which is the legislative framework for the Department of Environment, makes provision for enforcing agencies.

As declared under Section 13 of the EPA 2002:

There shall be such enforcing agencies as are designated in the Fourth Schedule in respect of such environmental medium, or such pollutant, as is specified.

• Subject to subsection (3), an enforcing agency and an environmental liaison officer designated by it shall have the functions, powers and duties specified in the Fourth Schedule.

The table below indicates the various enforcing agencies in respect of the different environmental medium or pollutant. Any member of the public wishing to make a complaint with regards to any case of environmental pollution may contact the respective enforcing agency as per the specified contact details.
