Achievements of Ministry of Environment and National Development Unit (NDU)

 

The aim of the National Development Unit of the Ministry of the Ministry of Environment and National Development Unit (NDU) is to provide basic infrastructure needs and amenities to bring inhabitants of remote, deprived regions in the mainstream of development.

 

Construction/Upgrading of Roads

 

With a view to modernise the country and promote tourism development, every effort is being made to improve in-land communication and facilitate access of residential agglomerations.  So far, 25 new road construction projects and 178 road resurfacing schemes involving around
Rs 152,097,200 have been implemented.

 

Drain Network Schemes relating to flooding problems

 

Representations have been received from Local Authorities that during heavy rainfall a number of regions experience problems of flooding due to improper drain systems.  Under the Land Drainage Programme,
19 Drain Projects, worth approx. Rs 126m, have been implemented in a number of localities namely Terre Rouge, Cité EDC Terre Rouge, Triolet, Petit Verger, Dagotière, Moka, Poste de Flacq, Nouvelle
France, Bois Chéri,
Cité L’Embrasure, Le Morne, Baie du Cap and Cité Atlee.

 

As a result of heavy rain during the passage of Cyclone Hennie, the region of Chitrakoot in the vincinity of Vallée des Prêtres was subject to a serious problem of landslide.  Following a tender exercise, a Geotechnical Study will be undertaken for remedial action relating to the landslide problem.

 

Improvement in connection with celebration of Cavadee/Maha Shivaratree Festivals

 

A Ministerial Committee chaired by our Minister, for the celebration of Cavadee and Maha Shivratree festivals, was instrumental, through NDU, for the execution of around 15 schemes worth around Rs 47.5m to carry out improvement work at river borders, to embellish/upgrade places of worship and to upkeep accesses.

 

An important project consisting of provision of adequate parking facility, improvement of sanitary facilities, landscaping work including construction of a giant Shiv Statue was implemented to transform Ganga Talao, found in a beautiful nature setting, into an important religious/tourist destination.

 

Community Centres/Multi-purpose Facilities

 

The NDU under its programme to enhance quality of life in remote regions, put up Community Centres at Petite Retraite, Riche Mare, Coromandel, Cité Roma, Riche Terre, Pont Praslin, Nouvelle Découverte, Clemencia, Olivia, Pont Lardier, Bois Cheri, Camp Caval, Eau Coulée, Wooton, Cité Joachim and Ilot.

 

Multi-purpose complexes with halls, amenities for dress making, for computer training, indoor games and health keep-fit facilities have been put up at Triolet, Bambous Virieux and Bel Air.  The construction of a new Recreational Centre at Pailles has also been completed.

 

Market Fairs

 

In the context of modernization of amenities, schemes to provide for market facilities have been implemented in important localities such as Plaisance, Rose Hill, Pamplemousses, Pte aux Sables and Fond du Sac.

 

Football Ground/Youth Centre/Sports Complexes/Leisure Parks

 

For the healthy development of the youth and to promote sports facilities, schemes for the provision of football grounds have been executed at La Porte (Flacq), Isidore Rose (Camp Ithier, Flacq), Riche Mare, Mare D’Australia, Camp Chapelon, Roche Bois, Upper Dagotière, Mare La Chaux, Caroline, Ecroignard, Mont Ida, La Rosa, Surinam,
Camp Fouquereaux and Midlands.

 

Youth Centres have been put up at St François, Port Louis and Chemin Grenier.  Sports Complex and Leisure Parks have been provided at Poudre D’Or, Riche Lieu.  Provision has been made for Volley-ball pitch at Camp Marcellin, Caroline and the Sports Complex of Camp le Vieux has been upgraded.

 

Kindergarten/Pre-Primary Schools

 

To look after nursery going children, kindergarten  and pre-primary schools have been constructed at Villebague and Vuillemin, Quartier Militaire.

 

Embellishment Work


Embellishment work worth Rs 54.8m has been carried out in different parts of the country.


To promote tourism development, embellishment and landscaping work have been carried out at
Blue Bay beach, in coastal regions of Roche Bois, Mare la Chaux, Pte des Regates, Mahebourg, Pte Gersigny, Poste de Flacq.

 

In the context of the commemoration of the Birth Anniversary of Late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, a major improvement scheme was implemented to convert Kewal Nagar into a historical and tourist attraction.

 

BusPark

 

To upgrade inland transport amenities, Bus Terminal/Bus Park facilities have been put up at Hermitage, Berthaud Avenue, Quatre Bornes and at Rose Belle.

 

Handicraft Centre

 

To provide employment opportunities for the young unemployed to embark in innovative   Cottage/Handicraft small-scale enterprises, a Handicraft Centre to provide training to the young and to serve as a forum for the promotion of handicraft projects has been put up at Paillotte.

 

Healthy-living Natural Trail Scheme

 

For the well-being of inhabitants, provision has been made to set up Nature Trail facilities at Rivière du Rempart and Lallmatie.
